My Reflection on the writing process of "The Truth Behind Bitter Greens"
During the process of writing “The Bitter Truth Behind Rapunzel,” I revised my essay several times to reflect changes that I felt better improved my quality of writing. My first revision focused on fixing grammatical errors, syntax and strengthening my thesis. I chose to focus my essay around the feministic point of view for a historical fictitious work by examining my main points of added character depth, horror, and more elaborate plot details through a feministic perspective. After carefully editing my paper to make the necessary connections, I also concluded my essay with comparing how the adaptation connects the natural world to the magical world of the original fairy tale.
Another step in this revision was to add additional literary sources, both primary and secondary, to my paper. The first additional source I added was Jack Zipes to provide commentary on horrific themes in fairy tales. I also used the University of Mississippi’s library resources to find two different articles on feministic perspectives in the original fairy tale and other similar stories. Finally, I concluded my literary research by using Kate Forsyth’s personal blog where she discusses several of her choices as an author and her choices in adapting the original fairy tale.
My next step in the revision was to add in media sources, such as artwork, music, and video. I decided to add pictures of the tower, Charlotte, and Lucio to reflect the themes of specific paragraphs that the artwork is placed next to. I also added a hyperlink to a soundcloud of an aria to reflect Margherita’s interest and personal connection to singing, which is an important element in both the original fairy tale and the adaptation. Finally, I concluded my media search by hyperlinking my title of the paper as a link to the trailer for Bitter Greens that Kate Forsyth used in her blog.
After I finalized my paper, our class created a website that we set up to exhibit our work this semester. When I made my website page, I chose to add several other artworks from another website that I found, that also reflected the topics of their surrounding paragraphs. I also considered writing this revision as a video, but due to my lack of knowledge with editing software—this did not come to fruition.
Through the course of writing this paper, I relied on several topics that we discussed in our class, but most specifically, on the topics of witches, parental love, and dangerous love. After reading several fairy tales for each of these topics, I compared Bitter Greens to the themes present in these tales to come to conclusions on the hidden meaning behind certain actions. What I found most impressive about this novel adaption was the intricate background of each character that helped rationalize their decisions. After writing this paper, I felt like by meeting the course goals to close read, interpret, and write, my knowledge of fairy tale troops and themes was channeled into an applicable tool to use at my command.
